Every day in front of the mirror, put your feet at shoulder width while facing forward and squat down-and-up 10-20 times for 2 or 3 sets. This will build your leg and buttock muscles. As you build up strength, try holding 2 or 5 pound dumbbells in your hands while you work out. Be sure to warm up first, and stop if you notice any sharp pain in your knees.

Tip #2: Pushups: Pushups are a form of strength training: during a pushup your arms have to support up to 70% of your body weight. Do 2 or 3 sets of 20 pushups to build arm strength and increase your RMR.

Tip #3: Jumping jacks: Jumping jacks are an excellent whole-body aerobic workout you can do right at home. Do 4 or 5 sets of 20 jumping jacks, or as needed. Hint: if you live in an apartment or stay in a second-story bedroom, be considerate of your neighbors by going outside or doing these in a first story room.

Tip #4: Fast walking: While walking is in itself a great aerobic exercise, fast walking is even better for burning fat. Make sure you really stretch first and warm up with regular walking. Once you start your faster walking pace, try to maintain as much speed as possible for as long as you can. If you get tired, try doing intervals of fast walking followed by short periods of slower walking.

Tip #5: Stepping: Stepping is a great way to get your heart beating and to burn calories. You can use your stairs at home, but for best results I suggest buying specialized stackable step mats and stack them up to at least 15 inches (38 cm). Do 2 to 3 sets of 20 steps each to begin. Even though you may not feel like the stepping is helping, it is! This exercise will not only help you lose weight but will also help shape up your buttocks and legs.

An important element in a strategy to lose weight quickly at home is to do a combination of exercises that build muscles (strength training) while burning fat (aerobic exercises). Start a regimen of most or all of these exercises 2-3 days/week and watch the unhealthy fat melt away.

This fiber will help push out those wastes. It may take some time since those wastes are wedged in there pretty good (in most cases) from years of dietary abuse from you. Just be consistent with getting the 40 or more grams of fiber a day and slowly but surely that stuff will get loosened up and swept out of your body.

The Truth About Elliptical Machines Exposed

I'm willing to bet that almost every gym-goer has stepped on an elliptical machine at some point in their training career.
 
Elliptical machines are most popular with women, and I have even seen people waiting in line to use the machine! Now, you need to ask yourself: am I really getting a great workout and burning a lot of calories on the elliptical machine?
 
And the answer is... no. You are not getting a great workout or burning as many calories as you think.
 
First, you should understand this principle: people take the path of least resistance, and working out is no exception. Think about it: what are the most popular machines? Obviously the most popular is the elliptical, and I would say the bike is a close second. These are the easiest to perform.
 
When you use an elliptical machine, for the most part you are using momentum and just gliding along. It doesn't matter if the machine says you burned 300 calories in 30 minutes; those numbers are usually off by about 30 percent, or more. Furthermore, the elliptical machine does absolutely nothing to help "tone" your muscles. I don't care what the programs on the machine say they do; the elliptical will not help you build lean muscle.
 
Now that you know the elliptical machine is not great for building a better body, where do you go from here?
 
If you are going to spend 30 minutes at the gym, you might as well spend that time doing whatever will get you the best results in the least amount of time.
 
Spend that time doing a weight training circuit. What you will do is pick 3 exercises--one for your lower body (reverse lunges), one for an upper body push (push-ups or dumbbell bench presses), and one for an upper body pull (chin-ups or dumbbell rows). I would start out doing sets of 10 reps for each exercise, and rest 60 seconds between each exercise. One more thing: make sure you use a challenging weight.
 
Here's how that would look:
Reverse Lunges x 10
Rest 60 seconds
Push-ups x 10
Rest 60 seconds
Dumbbell rows x 10
Rest 60 seconds
 
And then repeat that entire circuit 3 more times. That workout will help you build lean muscle which will give you that lean, athletic, healthy look. The elliptical machine will never be able to do that.
 
You can follow that same workout format to design your own workouts. Also, if you want to train your core, stick with movements like planks, side planks, stability ball rollouts, and ab wheel rollouts. They will do much more for your core than crunches and sit-ups, and they are much safer on your spine.
 
Now when you enter the gym, walk past the elliptical machine and spend your time doing exercises that will build you the body you truly want!

Years ago (c. 1983) before I joined a gym, I tried various exercise programs to keep fit. With my meager budget at the time, my options were rather limited. I tried running at the high school track since that was a cost-free activity. I forced myself out on to the hot asphalt track for a couple of weeks one summer, but eventually gave up because it was too monotonous and my knees started getting sore from the constant pounding.

I then decided to invest in a Precor rowing machine, which I purchased from a local sporting goods store. It set me back about 5, but I felt it was worth it since I desperately wanted to get in shape. Rowing machines were also quite the rage back then and I wanted to get in on the action too!

I used the Precor rower religiously for a while. After all, I had sunk a good portion of my savings into it! The machine itself was rather simply constructed and as a result, there wasn't much that could malfunction or break on it.

They use some of the very same technologies that are also employed in the top-of-the-line elliptical trainers. They also have heart rate monitors either built in to the handle grips or via wireless chest straps and a Polar interface. And of course, they have consoles that display distance, time, and calories burned just like most elliptical trainers.

So which is the better piece of fitness equipment? Let's take a look at some criteria that should be used when evaluating any piece of exercise equipment:

*Safety - rowing machines are relatively safe, but care must be used in learning the proper exercise form. Unfortunately, many people don't use proper form when using a rowing machine and put undue stress on their lower backs. Like an elliptical trainer, a rowing machine is low impact, but since the legs are flexed and extended, this puts stress on the knees, which could be uncomfortable for people with knee problems.

*Ease of use - as with safety, learning the proper use of a rowing machine is vital. Unlike an elliptical trainer, where its use is fairly intuitive, a rower requires proper instruction and practice in its use. There is more coordination required between the lower and upper body when using a rower. However, this shouldn't deter you from using a rowing machine. *Quality of workout - a rowing machine can provide a great cardio-vascular workout. It helps to monitor you heart rate and stay within the appropriate target zone for your age, condition, and training objective. *Affordability - rowing machines parallel elliptical trainers in price range. Like ellipticals, they span the gamut from cheap models to top-end, commercial grade units costing several thousand dollars. And like ellipticals, you typically get what you pay for. So avoid the cheap stuff unless you want the grief and aggravation that goes along with it!

Rowing machines and elliptical trainers are both very worthy pieces of exercise equipment. If you have the luxury, then why not use both? Cross training by switching up between the rowing machine and elliptical trainer will keep your body challenged while keeping your workouts fresh and enjoyable.

And what about that Precor rowing machine I bought back in 1983? It's still sitting in my storage closet. And what about Precor? Well, they went on to invent the first elliptical trainer 12 years later in 1995.
